Videos share EMS stories
They are the first to respond when we call for help: paramedics, emergency medical technicians and first responders. Maybe it’s a 5-year-old who swallowed penny or an accident with multiple injuries.
The annual Arrowhead EMS Conference brings them together for training and networking at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. As they browsed booths at this year's conference, we asked emergency workers to talk about what they do and why they do it. What we discovered was sometimes tragic, sometimes funny -- but mostly inspiring.
Many EMTs and First Responders are volunteers serving their communities. Critical care begins with them. They’re called to help a friend’s infant, a former teacher, a neighbor or even their own family members. “When tragedy happens, it sometimes is a little harder to deal with because it touches the heart,” says Mike Zimmer, chief of the Wykoff Volunteer Fire Department.
Matthew Lange serves as a Biwabik Township First Responder to show people that someone still cares -- and to restore a person’s faith in mankind.
They hold our hands and look into our eyes to calm and comfort us. They save our lives.
We at SMDC Health System invite you to listen to their stories in these videos.
As Lange says, sometimes the best story is simple: “Nobody died.”
